THE WHY BEHIND THE GUARDIAN PROJECT

Since September 11, 2001, Special Operations Forces have been constantly deployed. Even though a deployment could be as little as three months, the operation tempo is compounded by back to back deployments. Our Special Operations units are deploying much more frequently than normal; and one must also take into account their pre-deployment preparation. When a SOF/SF service member says they have been deployed 20 times, that is a stress level that can only be understood by a fellow service member.

The stress of training and battle causes our service members to depend upon each other for their shared survival. This relationship of interdependence causes each soldier to adopt an attitude of “I cannot let my buddies down," even to the point of self-sacrifice. The resultant trust and closeness creates a bond beyond brotherhood. Sharing life-shaping, intense experiences, such as bearing the brunt of enemy fire, is a bond unlike any other.

Our retreats and tailored events provide a special opportunity for fellow operators to come together in a no pressure environment. They are specifically designed to allow relaxation and camaraderie between the service members. Through peer to peer events, we allow them to break through the silence and openly discuss their battlefield and personal hardships. When our service members realize they are not alone, they discover it is appropriate — and not a stigma — to seek help, support, and guidance when needed from fellow SOF professionals and their families.
